Commercial Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring

Vinyl wood plank floors are commonly referred to as luxury vinyl tile, or LVT, a waterproof material that interlocks together. Most people don’t consider vinyl wood-looking planks as tile, but that is what the industry has labeled it. So we generally refer people to vinyl wood plank flooring when it comes to luxury vinyl tile.

Luxury vinyl planks mostly come in a wood-look grain pattern, but a few manufacturers have created natural-looking designs that emulate granite and stone. Armstrong manufactures some of the most realistic high-end commercial vinyl plank flooring that resembles real hardwood floors.

Commercial interlocking vinyl plank flooring is durable—it can withstand heavy loads and is also highly scratch resistant. It’s considered more durable than laminate flooring and linoleum.

What to Know about Installation

Commercial vinyl wood flooring is called a floating installation or self-adhering planks. This flooring is more common in residential homes and uses the no-glue method.

Glue-down method is recommended for commercial flooring applications so that floors do not shift or peel during high traffic or hot and cold environments.

LVT Pricing and Installation Cost

The average cost of commercial waterproof vinyl flooring planks ranges from $2.50 to $4.50 per square foot. This price will depend on the brand and the level of grade. Installing Armstrong vinyl plank flooring costs about $2–$4 per square foot, depending on the condition of the existing floor.

Some premium waterproof vinyl plank flooring options do not require adhesive, but most commercial-grade vinyl plank floors will require a special glue or epoxy adhesive.

Vinyl Wood Plank Sizes

Commercial-grade vinyl wood plank strips come in narrow 3", 4", or 5" planks up to 6", 7", and 8" widths and are 36" to 48" long. Some engineered vinyl flooring brands create varying lengths, creating a unique look—some pieces could be 36" long, and another piece in the same carton could be 48" long.

Knowing What Wear Layer Is Right for You

If you’ve been to Home Depot or Lowe’s, you’ll likely have seen a 6-mil or 12-mil wear layer. Despite its durability, either layer may not be suitable for every space. If you are buying vinyl plank floors because you are renting a home and want to maintain your floors, you’ll need to choose the right wear layer.

Anything less than 12-mil would be good for low-traffic residential homes or commercial buildings with lighter foot traffic. A 20-mil is recommended for most commercial structures with high foot traffic, like a grocery store, with crowds pushing shopping carts and heavy carts or lifts being driven across the floor. A 30-mil is best for extreme conditions, wherein floors will constantly experience a lot of wear and tear. It’s also great if you need a wear layer that lasts for a long time.

Advantages of Vinyl Wood vs. Hardwood

One advantage of vinyl wood over real hardwood is the ease of replacing a damaged or stained plank. Real hardwood is almost impossible to replace, but commercial-grade vinyl plank flooring can be fixed by simply pulling up the damaged planks and replacing them with new vinyl planks.

Hardwood flooring is beautiful, and the texture is second to none; however, the durability of luxury vinyl plank flooring and its cost can’t be matched. If you are trying to get the look of real hardwood floors and would like to save money with a product that will last decades, choose LVT.
